Gender-Based Violence & Rights & Justice

Women and girls around the world flee the constant threat of rape, assault, domestic violence, exploitation and other gender-based violence. They face systematic violence at home because of conflict or their government's inability or unwillingness to protect them from criminal activity. They undertake perilous journeys even knowing that they are likely to experience additional violence along the way.

Even when they reach what is supposed to be a safe haven, the violence does not end for many of them. Women and girls are targeted by strangers, by guards in detention facilities and registration centers and by their own families. While seeking asylum or other legal protection, they are especially vulnerable to exploitation and tend to lack any means of recourse.
